Ran a D&D 4th Edition game last night. I have to say I was surprised, I had forgotten how interesting the characters were. The players all really enjoyed the game, showed more interest in what was going on and enjoyed the greater tactics you get with D&D 4th Ed. Trying to get the best position to use your encounter powers, deciding if this is a strong enough encounter to use that big daily power and of course avoiding those attacks of opportunity.
The characters seem overall more robust and enjoyable than 5th Ed characters, you have more to do and they make you feel heroic; I never had that feeling with my 5th Ed character.
The main issue, for me, with the 4th Ed is that the characters can get overly complicated with higher levels and keeping track of powers is problematic unless you have some electronic means to do that. That used to mean subscribing to wizards of the coast for their characters and games tools. They weren't bad but I never thought that they made enough use out of the idea of templates that could be added to monster to give them a nice and unpredictable twist to them.
Although this was a short fill in game, I think I will definately go back and have a think about setting up something for a longer running game.
