Role-playing games (RPGs) can be a lot of fun, but they can also be a little intimidating for those who have never run one before. Whether you're a seasoned GM (Game Master) or a beginner, there are a few key steps you can follow to help ensure that your RPG runs smoothly and everyone has a great time. Here are some tips for running a successful role-playing game:
Choose the right game: Before you start running an RPG, it's important to choose the right game. There are many different RPGs out there, each with its own rules, mechanics, and style. Choose a game that you are familiar with and that you think will be enjoyable for your group. Fate is a rules-light game with an emphasis on characters, and Chivalry & Sorcery is a crunch rules system based on the social aspect of Medieval life.
Plan your story: Before your first session, spend some time planning your story. This could involve creating a detailed plot, outlining key events, and creating non-player characters (NPCs). The more you plan ahead, the easier it will be to run the game when it comes time to play. Try this, take a notebook and find a spread of pages, divide them into two with a line giving you 8 panels in the spread. Use each panel to list: 10 NPCs, Name / Race / Sex / Class and Level / Age. Then give them three positive aspects and one negative aspect. Next panel list 10 locations with a simple description and the same 3+1 aspects. The 3rd-panel list ten subplot Ideas and give them a sentence or two. The 4th-panel list 10 organisations that fit with the area the game is set in and the same 3+1 aspects. You're prepared for most situations with these at the ready.
Make character creation easy: Character creation can be one of the most enjoyable parts of an RPG, but it can also be the most time-consuming. Make sure you have a clear and straightforward process for creating characters and make sure your players understand all the rules and mechanics of the game. Start by outlining the campaign, maybe have a 'Day in the life' story of a major actor in the world. Give the players something to key their imagination to when they come to make their hero.
Encourage player creativity: One of the best things about RPGs is the opportunity for players to be creative. Encourage your players to come up with their own ideas, and be flexible in adapting your story to fit their characters' actions. I always say "YES", and "However!?" Flashbacks work well to get the players to tell you how they see their actions working, something in their past that went a similar way. I have listed how these work in C&S over several of my books,
Be prepared for the unexpected: No matter how well you plan, things will rarely go according to plan in an RPG. Be prepared to adapt and change your story as needed, and don't be afraid to make changes on the fly. See 2
Keep the pace moving: RPGs can be a lot of fun, but they can also be slow-paced. Keep the game moving by encouraging players to take action, and don't let the game get bogged down in lengthy conversations or debates.
Reward players: Finally, make sure you reward your players for their efforts. This could involve giving out experience points, treasure, or other in-game rewards. By rewarding your players, you'll keep them motivated and invested in the game.
Running a role-playing game can be a lot of work, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. By following these tips, you can help ensure that your RPG runs smoothly and everyone has a great time. So why not gather your friends and start your next adventure today?

FATE (Fantastic Adventures in Tabletop Entertainment) is a popular role-playing game that emphasizes storytelling and character development over complex rules and mechanics. It is a narrative-focused game that allows players to create their own unique stories and adventures in a variety of settings, from medieval fantasy to futuristic science fiction.
One of the defining features of FATE is its use of Aspects, which are short phrases that describe a character's unique personality traits, abilities, or motivations. These Aspects can be invoked to add bonuses to dice rolls or to influence the outcome of events in the game.
Another key aspect of FATE is its emphasis on collaboration and improvisation. Players are encouraged to work together to create interesting stories and adventures, and the GM (Game Master) is often seen as a facilitator rather than an authority figure. This creates a more relaxed and creative gaming environment, where players have more control over the direction of the game.
FATE uses a simple and flexible system of dice rolls and skill checks to resolve conflicts and determine the outcome of events in the game. The game also includes a range of stunts, which are special abilities that allow characters to perform extraordinary feats or add unique twists to their actions.
Overall, FATE is a highly accessible and flexible role-playing game that is ideal for players who want to focus on character development, storytelling, and collaborative play. Whether you're a seasoned role-player or a newcomer to the hobby, FATE is a great choice for anyone who wants to explore new and exciting worlds, create memorable characters, and have fun playing with friends.
