Spec Fatigue

When the news that PENTAX might be folding up it's camera and lens business broke I found myself thinking about what to do. So I started looking at the other brands, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji etc. Taking in the specs and data on their camera and lenses, looking at the pricing and trying to get an idea of the best value and which brand has the cheap second has lens market going for it.

Then it hit me. My camera still takes amazing photos and unless the technology changes dramatically in the next 10 years my camera will still take amazing photos for the next 10 years. Okay there is always the chance you break the camera. Well that's the beauty of the PENTAX cameras, my god they are rugged, waterproof almost and built like a tank. I have fallen over on a muddy bank and landed on top of the camera, slid down the hill and over rocks. When I got to the bottom I washed the camera off in the river and it was fine!

So what did I learn. My current camera takes great photos, equipped with the the lovely prime lenses I can't fault the quality and performance of my lenses and camera. There will come a day when I have the spare cash, my old camera is looking a little worse for wear or the technology of imaging takes a big leap. However; until then I am totally spec fatigued and just want to shoot good photos.

I did narrow things down to Sony A9 mirrorless, or Nikon D500. I shoot a lot of wildlife and both of these now have extraordinary cameras for this. With regards to the other brands, Canon seemed to have little innovation or value in their cameras but they have amazing pro lenses and great video; which has no interest for me. Fuji make nice cameras and have lovely glass, probably a better range than Sony, certainly better value. They just look unbalanced and the ergonomics of an XT-2 and a 400mm lens seems silly.
